About the Item

Modular floor to ceiling shelving system attributed to Dassi of Milan, Italy 1950s. An impressive design with lots of interesting detail. The wood of this set looks to be rosewood, with a glossy varnish, and the metalwork is finished in black with brass accents. The set comprises components as follows: - four tapering uprights of wood with steel feet and brass inserts - four poles of metal, with removable metal discs at ceiling level - two cupboards, each with two doors - larger angled door on one side and suitably shaped internal glass shelves; the cupboards can be turned so the large door can sit either to the left or right (previously used to the right) - one set of three drawers - one fall-front cupboard with original key and working lock in place - seven shelves with black metal hangers and brass spacers - three metal lighting trays The system is designed to enable the user to position the shelves and storage units according to their own needs, and there is some fading showing where cupboards have been placed in the past. The uprights have metal inserts at the top, which are adjustable in height (see notes on dimensions below). The black lacquered lighting track at the top is a beautiful feature, with pierced detailing to the metal. All components are finished to all sides, to enable the set to be used as a room divider. Please note for this reason the uprights do not fix to the back wall - strength is taken from bracing at the ceiling, and suitable installation will be required. You may wish to liaise with your metalworker to ensure the components work for your ceiling height and project. The set is largely in original condition with signs of wear in line with age and use throughout. These include some fading; crazing / losses to the glossy varnish and warping to the front of the drawer unit. You may wish to refinish, or the set can be used as it is. If you would like more details or additional images please just drop us a note. The lighting trays will need new strips or bulbs installed, and we recommend this is carried out in situ to ensure it meets your local needs; there are some losses to the off-white paintwork inside the lighting trays but this is not visible in use. Approximate dimensions: Ceiling height in these images is 303cm, and we have modified the height of the system to set up for this height - see note below. - Height of the uprights: Range is approximately 294.5-300.5cm made up of wooden upright, metal pole plus ceiling disc Please be aware that in order to install this set we have added short bespoke extension pieces to all but the left hand upright (which sits below the plasterwork on our ceiling); these small pieces are not part of the set. - Width of three bays as shown: 248cm - Width of individual cupboards/shelves excluding brass spacers: 77cm - Depth of shelves: 25.5cm - Depth of the deepest component (two cupboards): 43.5cm.

Repaired: Minor work has been carried out to the drawer unit to address warping to the drawer fronts. Replacements made: The metal pieces at the top of the wooden uprights, where the poles screw into the wood, have been replaced with new pieces of the same design as the originals. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading.
