Glazed bookcase with crenelated cornice, by James Winter & Sons A mahogany bookcase of architectural form. A pair of glazed cupboards with 4 adjustable shelves, all ebonised to the front edge. The cornice with bold moulded crenelations. The lower cupboard doors with well figured matched veneered fronts, open to a single adjustable shelf on pegs. Retailed by James Winter & Sons, 101 Wardour Street, Soho, London. English, circa 1830 235cm H, 112cm W, 40cm D. James Winter & Sons The business commenced at 101 Wardour Street in 1823, and, after 1840, moving to 151/153/155 Wardour Street. The ‘James Winter’ label describes themselves as ‘Brokers, Appraisers & Undertakers, Dealer in Second Hand Household Furniture’. A trade card, recently found, notes ‘A Liberal Price for Second Hand Furniture in Large or Small Quantities’. Much of the furniture stamped by the company is of the very highest quality.The company closed in 1870.
