Impressive Classical Mahogany French Bibliotheque Bookcase Cabinet

About the Item

This cabinet made from choice mahogany solid construction and oak secondary woods is a Fine example of its kind. This cabinet was made circa 1840-1850 during the last days of Charles X's rein or the first day of Napoleon III rein. This period is characterized by large format pieces and frontal design showing classical ideals without the heavy handed mounts and extravagant veneer choices of the Empire period. This cabinet relies entirely on its expanses of glass and the small intricate details of carving as its decorative elements. Retaining its original hand rolled glass glazing the upper doors area a dramatic example of Frances glass industry( this was sponsored in the late 17th century by Louis XIV and created a substantial financial reward and monopoly for France for many years to come) with a rich play of glass filled with small waves and seeds ( air bubbles). The small detail carving while easy to over look on such a large cabinet are placed there to lighten and enrich the cabinet (see photo 5, 6 and 7). Dental carving across the top speaks to classical design and architecture, while the stop fluted pilasters are well done and sensitive in nature. Of particular interest is the recessed hinges that are mechanical wonders in themselves while being strong and Industrial enough to hold the doors in place they show as little exposed metal as possible and still function with great skill. The cabinet has a number of upper shelves that are adjustable with wood slates making it possible to create any configuration the owner needs while the low section has two shelves each and all the sections lock and have keys. The piece also retains its original French polish. This piece would have been costly and expensive to produce from mahogany solids and the use indicates books and display of treasured objects speaking to the education and sophistication of the client who commissioned this piece. It disassembles into two sections, while all the doors and shelves remove making it easy to move and simple to assemble.
