Beautifully handcrafted, one of a kind, great color and excellent condition, Gothic cloister bookcase. We are always on the lookout for top quality made and impressively handcrafted Gothic antiques (also for our private collections) and to have found a Gothic Revival bookcase of this size and workmanship more than made our day. So much so that I decided to keep this bookcase even though I did not have the space for it (yet). Since I will be moving to a new home soon and since I am already certain there will be no space left for this, over 8 feet tall, Gothic bookcase, I have decided to let someone else use and enjoy it. Bookcases are and have always been the most sought after pieces of antique furniture and we hardly ever find them in the Gothic Style. For the past 12 years this stunning specimen has been standing in the small and unused room where we shot the photos and, as so often is the case, this unique bookcase too is much better looking in real life. It has a presence and patina that is unsurpassed and the height, width and depth ratio makes it perfectly balanced. Unfortunately all those qualities are hard to capture whilst shooting photos in a small room. This one of a kind and tall bookcase really needs and deserves a room with a higher ceiling, because here it is less than one inch from the ceiling. According to the former owner this Gothic bookcase was once used in (and probably custom made for) a monastery in the south east of the Netherlands. Because of the many hand carved and stylized Gothic symbols and because of the top quality workmanship and materials, this made perfect sense. Mind you, in our experience, the best quality made Gothic pieces have always been the ones that were made for churches and monasteries, because around the turn of the century (and before that) they were the institutions with the 'deepest pockets'. This bookcase is a two-piece cabinet and the base is a little deeper and wider than the taller top. The top part is higher and has more bookshelfs, but all shelfs are adjustable in height and all 4 doors come with perfect working and top quality, brass locks and keys. This relatively light oak (color wise) bookcase truly has the most beautiful patina and it could hardly be in better condition. Some parts are made of the most beautiful tiger oak and some parts are almost two inches thick, making this one of the strongest and most stabile bookcases you will ever find. Besides being an absolute joy to own and to look at, this cabinet also is highly practical. The largest part of the shelfs (the part behind the oak front-edges) are made of pine. Besides that, this majestic bookcase is entirely handcrafted and handcarved out of solid oak only. Because of its size and design this remarkable cabinet can be used for all kinds of purposes, but used as a bookcase in a (private) library or (home) office we feel this unique antique will definitely make somebody happy for a very long time. Wear consistent with age and use. The actual warm color of this striking bookcase is the color that you see in images 1 and 2. In some of the close-up photos the real color changed to a bit of a 'flat color' oak, but that is not the real color. Please also read our item description.
