Late Regency Period Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase Circa 1825-30

About the Item

A Very Fine Late Regency Period Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase in the Manner of J. C. Loudon c.1825-30. Of fine and small size, this charming piece is in a restrained gothic style with arched astragal glazing bars to the upper bookcase doors and interesting panelled reserves to the secretaire drawer and the two cupboard doors below. Blind fretwork in the gothic taste also decorates the pilasters on the lower section which is further ornamented with a finely gadrooned edging and feet. The whole piece is veneered in finely selected mahogany of lovely figure which has achieved a very fine colour and patination and contrasts gloriously with the gilt metal handles on the secretaire drawer. The gilt brass central strip on the bookcase doors, both decorative and a way to keep out dust, is a very nice touch as well. The cupboard base features one traditional cupboard door and another which conceals a leaded cellaret compartment designed for keeping wine cool. This feature makes clear that the piece was originally intended as a multi-purpose piece of furniture in a dining room, probably used for displaying the dinner service when not in use. The secretaire section on our piece is very well executed with fine satinwood drawer fronts, an arrangement of pigeon holes and a fine green leather writing section. The secretaire hinges themselves are of extremely high quality and beautifully made. A very fine example of desirable size and with great decorative appeal.

  • Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase
    Located in Gloucestershire, GB
An Exceptional Quality Early 19th Century French Mahogany Bookcase with the Finest Possible Veneers and Wonderful Carving Throughout. This superb bookcase features the best quality mahogany veneers laid on to an oak carcase with solid mahogany doors, all expensive features that were only employed by the best workshops when money was no object. The shaped cornice and the panelled lower doors suggest a gothic inspiration but this is handled with real delicacy which was often not the case with later 19th century gothic revivalism which could be overbearing and overpowering to the eye. Designed for the display of fine books, porcelain or objects, the top section of the bookcase is largely plain, allowing the fine veneers to shine in conjunction with small carvings on the pilasters and a number of finely executed mouldings. The lower section is where the decorative scheme becomes more pronounced, small acanthus carvings on the pilasters framing the spectacular panelled doors which are executed in particularly high relief. Even here where the decoration is more prominent, the grain of the mahogany catches the eye first as it is so beautifully figured and of excellent colour. The pilasters on this lower section are carved so as to simulate partially octagonal columns of obvious gothic inspiration and there are pull out reading and writing slides concealed in the frieze between the upper and lower sections. The doors in the base section open to reveal simple cupboards...
