About the Item

This is a matched pair of Regency style bookcase or secretary made in England, circa 1940. These are a fantastic example of English bench made furniture at it's finest. Each cabinet is made of satinwood with rosewood banding, mahogany inlays and both satinwood and ebony string inlays. Each piece starts with beautifully turned feet with a round reeded leg that is topped off with a wonderful foliate carved capital. There is a drawer on each cabinet that drops down to reveal a gold tooled green leather writing surface and fitted interior. There are three drawers each on the right and left with four cubby holes between to the desk interior. The drawers are all oak lined and hand dovetailed. The drawers and the doors have a rosewood banding with satinwood and ebony string inlays. Then there is satinwood followed by a mahogany panel. The surface of the cabinet has rounded bisquit ends. The upper consists of three glazed glass doors. The piece has a round convex mirror to its top that is surrounded by rosewood and satinwood. There are four finials to the top. The sides are in satinwood. The pieces have there original brass hardware. The original finish and the physical condition are outstanding. These bookcases are as good as it can get. They are of the finest quality. Each cabinet measures 47 1/2 in. wide x 21 1/4 in. deep x 93 1/2 in. tall.
