About the Item

Inspired by mid-century modernism, Floe is made from solid hardwood using real joinery. With its low profile, Floe will fit nicely under a window by the wall, or against the back of a sofa in the middle of the room. Please inquire if you are interested in obtaining Floe made from a wood species different from what is currently available. The story behind Floe: A few years ago James needed a low-profile bookcase to fit under a pair of tall windows. He wanted to use as little material as possible for the upright members, while still providing strength, and realized this meant orienting the vertical pieces at 90 degrees to each other. And minimizing material meant that the vertical pieces would be narrower at the top and bottom and fatter in the middle. It turns out that the visual result of these engineering constraints is pleasing to the eye. That first bookcase needed to be so short that there was no room for legs. These got added in later iterations.

Rotating Piro Spice Cabinet for Kitchen Islands
By James Loewen
Located in Goshen, IN
Piro Spice is a sculptural object that doubles as a countertop spice cabinet.  The design, backed by a utility patent, allows the cook to access his or her spices easily, flipping open the cabinet and spinning, as needed.  The bulk of the material is a pre-finished high-grade Baltic birch multiply that is intended to withstand rough handling (although you can also be gentle with it!). Before you purchase, make sure you have counter space available for it with no cabinets above. A kitchen island or peninsula is probably the best location. Piro Spice will hold about 25 of your favorite spices.   15"W x 8"D x 25"H. 14-day full refund policy - buyer pays for return shipping. The story behind Piro: The original idea for Piro came from James' need to store, and make accessible, the CDs in his music collection - he already had solutions for the vinyl records and the cassette tapes.  After a great deal of tinkering, he came up with a solution, and patented it - see U.S. patent 7,789,473.  Alas, in the meanwhile Steve Jobs had come along and marketed the iPad, which put a massive dent in the CD storage...
