Near Pair of 9' Georgian Style Mütter Museum Mahogany Library Display Cabinets

About the Item

A very fine, very tall near pair of late Georgian (or Neoclassical) style bookcases or cabinets. By repute, these cabinets were designed for and actively used by the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia, PA. They seem to have been used from the 19th into the early part of the 20th century. They vary slightly in their dimensions and comprise a near pair. The scale of these cabinets or bookcases is enormous. They are impressive in their presence and require a large, high-ceilinged space to highlight their exceptional scale. They seem to have had several alterations throughout their existence and use in the museum. They may well be made of wall mounted cabinets (with a desk or writing platform separating them) that were reconstructed into free standing cabinets in the late 19th or early 20th century. Each cabinet has a curved cornice top that rests atop a cabinet section with doors that open inward towards a medial stretcher. Each door has 8 glass panes for a total of 16 glass panes (or lights) per cabinet. The top panels have arches. Each top section rests on a base with paneled doors and a stepped foot. The antique glass panes are hand blown and have the incredible appeal that early, wavy glass conveys when built into furniture. All in all, a striking set of cabinets with a terrific history! Date: Parts from the 20th century and earlier. Overall condition: They are in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition with some light surface scratches, nicks and small losses throughout and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Condition details: There is some sun bleaching (or lightening of color) to the veneer on the sides. They retain numerous boards for shelves. The key hole of one base door lacks one escutcheon. There have been periodic repairs near the key holes. The bases have had sections carved out in the reverse to accommodate baseboards and/or floor elements. There are some checks (or cracks in the veneer on the sides) small apparent veneer repairs and some drops of paint on the surface here and there. Repaired: These perhaps began life as 'built-ins' and converted to stand alone pieces later. The key hole of one base door lacks one escutcheon. There have been periodic repairs near the key holes. There are some small apparent veneer repairs here and there. Additions or alterations made to the original: They may have been wall mounted cabinets that were reconstructed into free standing cabinets. The bases have had sections carved out in the reverse to accommodate baseboards and/or floor elements. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. There is some sun bleaching and checking to the veneer on the sides, some light surface scratches & nicks throughout, some drops of paint on the surface here and there, other points as noted above, & other signs of expected wear consistent with age.
