Queen Anne Bureau Bookcase in Inlaid Walnut, c. 1710

About the Item

A very fine Bureau Bookcase of the Queen Anne period. The frame constructed in walnut, with inlaid elm designs. The slanted fall-front opens to reveal a herringbone-inlaid arrangement of drawers and cubbyholes, a writing desk with a tooled leather surface inset. In addition to the apparent cubby-holes, the interiors feature a recessed compartment with inlaid sliding cover, and another sliding drawer: hidden above the central hinged door. (see Image #6) The upper section is capped with a double-bonnet top, complementing the form of the mirror panels. These each reserved by a radiating walnut border with herringbone inlay. The doors open to reveal an interior fitted with adjustable shelves and later upholstery, the inside of each door is paneled in a figured walnut veneer with a cross-banded border of the same. The lower section comprising a frieze and four sliding drawers, arranged in a two short-over-two long arrangement. Each drawer is veneered in a reflected panel of figured walnut, features a border of herringbone inlay, and retains its original brass fixtures. The cabinet is mounted on bracket feet, with a connecting apron along the base, veneered in the same Walnut. This is an exceptional demonstration of English craftsmanship in the Queen Anne period. The refined form, superb choice of materials, and attention to detail speaks volumes, and the piece has aged very well over the years.
