Rare & Important Dutch Arts & Crafts Oak Bookcase By Architect H.P. Berlage

About the Item

Stunning and practical, two-piece antique bookcase. When it comes to antique furniture, historically, bookcases are the most sought after in the world. When it comes to big names in the history of Dutch architecture and furniture design, H.P. Berlage is THE name to look out for. The international styles that come closes to his furniture designs are the American Mission Style and the British Arts and Crafts. Berlage's furniture was very 'strict' in design, but the subtle, decorative elements make them highly stylish and wonderfully timeless. Those with a good eye can tell that Berlage was a fan and therefor also influenced by the Gothic Style. In 2016 an exhibition about Berlage was named 'Berlage, the godfather of Dutch design'. It was held in the famous 'Beurs of Berlage', the former residence of the Amsterdam stock exchange. New (in circa 1905), this bookcase would have cost close to a years salary for the average working man. Therefore, Berlage's clientele (in the few years that he designed furniture for 't Binnenhuis in Amsterdam) mainly consisted of Dutch nobles and captains of industry. Furniture by Berlage only seldomly comes up for sale, because these well-to-do-families often take very good care of their real estate and they tend to keep the original furnishings. Former owners certainly took real good care of this Berlage bookcase, because it is in museum worthy condition, both inside and out. It is entirely original, it is branded with the HPB monogram and a metal nameplate of 't Binnenhuis (the business that Berlage and Jac van den Bosch founded). We purchased this striking bookcase with one pair of bad condition and non-original keys so we decided to have four new keys made (in the antique style ofcourse). With these four keys you can now use all six original locks that open and close all eight doors perfectly. As far as we know, this is only the second original bookcase by Berlage that has come onto the market in over 20 years time. The other one we sold three years ago. We feel blessed that this rare and important Arts & Crafts bookcase too found its way to our store. So if you are looking for the rarest and the best then this unique and important bookcase by world-famous architect and designer H.P. Berlage could be the one for you. All handcrafted out of solid tiger oak and inlaid with ebonized dowels that are there to emphasize the straight lined design, this sizable bookcase is an absolute joy to own and look at. With doors that shut perfectly tight and with a perfectly clean interior, it will take great care of your favourite books and there also is room for antiques and collectibles in the open niches and also on top of this cabinet. Over the many decades this bookcase has grown an amazing patina (best shown in image 2, 6 and 7). When we take close-up photos, unfortunately this marvellous patina does not show, but we guarantee you it is there and it is beautiful.
