About the Item

Rito is inspired by the lectern, one of the most representative pieces of ecclesiastical furniture from churches of the 15th century. These finely decorated stands were used to hold choral scores, but after the invention of the printing press and the subsequent reproduction of individual books, the use of lecterns declined. In the 1940s, the Mexican architect Luis Barragán revisited the idea of the lectern, treating it as an important element of his home and studio in Mexico City. Rito bears a similarly intimate inspiration, seeking to generate a dialogue between the private and the sacred. Its volcanic stone base and wooden pyramid-shaped body refer to volcanoes and pre-Hispanic Mexican constructions. The four sides of the piece invite you to place images on them and create your own visual sanctuaries of personal iconography. Rito was created using traditional carpentry techniques, giving way to unique interior spaces. When you open one of its sides, you’ll reveal an altar-like base, where you can store precious objects. The interplay between heavy stone and lightweight wood, as well as between shapes, give Rito sculptural and architectural qualities. Rito fuses pre-Hispanic heritage and the sacredness of the intimate sphere of the home in a contemplative object that solemnly transforms a space.
