GEORGE III MAHOGANY DIMINUTIVE SECRETARY WITH BOOKCASE
England, circa 1780
Item # 307PZN13W
A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting.
The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side.
The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout. The drawers are hung with period Georgian brasses...

George III English Thomas Chippendale Brown Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase
Located in Dublin, GB
A superb George III Chippendale period mahogany breakfront library bookcase, the raised architectural pediment, with a detailed moulded edge, above arched Gothic glazed doors carved with acanthus, resting on a raised paneled door base with a deep plate-form base, (a design often seen in Thomas Chippendale work).
Footnote: The design for this bookcase can be seen in the life and works of Thomas Chippendale by Christopher Gilbert page 41 figure 65, as one of four bookcases commissioned by Sir Rowland Winn for his London townhouse in St James Square, or at Nostell Priory.

Large English George III Style Antique Mahogany Library Bookcase Breakfront
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A remarkably large library breakfront bookcase of the George III taste from the second quarter of the 19th century, this imposing cabinet is the very essence of presence. With glazed doors portioned with applied astragal moldings, the three bookcase sections open to reveal adjustable shelves. The center of the breakfront features three individual writing areas appearing to be drawers, but instead feature a "butler" desk with a fall-front that reveals pigeon-hole letter organizing slots on the left and right fall-fronts and in the center fall-front having tiny drawers flanking pigeon-holes. This is situated over three sections of blind-door cupboards below, opening to reveal generous storage with the drawer-lined interiors. The form is angular with stepped-in banded inlays surrounding the flamed mahogany veneers, book-matched in the fall-front drawers and with pleasing vertical grain in the lower doors.
It breaks down into nine pieces for a more convenient transport: note, the glass and wood doors...
