Substantial Post-War Unix Sectional Modular Oak Library Bookcase Shop Fitting

About the Item

An enormous bank of ‘Unix’ stacking glazed library bookcases, comprising of an impressive 26 sections and 114 boxes to fill! Retailed by the Phoenix Gallery of St. Martins Lane, Charing Cross, London probably in the late 1940s, early 1950s, made of solid English Oak. You can change the layout very easily as these bookcases were designed to be fully modular. We have chosen to setup the various sized boxes in this format in order to leave feature gaps and for the piece to be displayed symmetrically. The setup that’s currently photographed (including plinths), comprises of 31 individual sections, and measures over 13 feet wide, but of course being modular, the height and width has infinite possibilities. All of the glass sliding doors have a lovely circular ground recessed finger pull, and can be easily removed should you prefer a partially glazed setup. Each of the units has an ivorine tag ’TOP’, ‘UNIX REGISTERED’ plus a paper label to the back of the majority of the boxes ‘From the Phoenix Gallery. 36A St Martin’s Lane, Charing Cross, London, WC2’. In the largest of the sections you can fit a book measuring 35cm high by 24.5cm deep, and the smaller boxes a 25cm high x 16.5cm deep book. In very good period condition, each section is solid and clean. There are a couple of small nibbles to a couple of the glass doors, but nothing of concern. Current set-up Measurements: 404cm W x 28cm D (20cm narrowest) x 249cm H Comprising of 26 sections and five plinths: 5 x five section glazed base units 134.5cm W x 28cm D x 38.5cm H 1 x five section un-glazed base unit on plinth 134.5 W x 20cm D x 28cm H 12 x five section glazed units 134.5cm W x 20cm D x 28cm H 4 x four section glazed units 108cm W x 20cm x 28cm H 4 x two section glazed units 54.5cm W x 20cm x 28cm H

Located in Sherborne, Dorset
This Scandinavian freestanding “Ergo" 3-Bay teak modular shelving unit was designed by John Texmon and Einar Blindheim for Blindheim Mobelfabrikk, Norway in the 1960s. The gently curved edges of the cabinets and nicely sculpted elevated legs make for a very elegant statement piece. This particular system is well-balanced and symmetrical, with a central bar, flanked by two cabinets, two cupboards and four shelves. This shelving system with four uprights, can be moved to any configration and includes four shelves, two cabinets with a diamond shaped design on the sliding glass doors, backed with the original period green backing boards, which are also in the rear of both cupboards and bar. The two matching cupboards have sliding doors with a single shelf, and the dropdown bar, with key, opens to reveal the original Mica laminate bar in a fantastic grey and white sixties pattern. In very clean vintage condition, the set is still wearing its original finish and has recently been gently oiled and is ready to be fitted.
