18th Century Country French Cherry Wood Buffet
About the Item
18th century Country French Cherry Wood Buffet reveals the splendor of the French style exhibited by talented rural artisans following the influences set forth by the court. The Louis XIV style is evident in this expression, with a bold yet stylized shell taking center stage on the undulating apron and facing double arched frames on the cabinet doors, added to the oversize, elaborately forged pull guards and key guards on the drawers and doors, the latter of which are hung with full length steel barrel hinges. Doors open wide without a stile in the middle to allow easy access to the cavernous interior, fitted with one shelf. Drawers are spacious too, and accented with a wheat wreath carving in the middle. Look closely to see the pegged mortise & tenon joinery throughout, even on the hand-chamfered rough-hewn panels of the back side. Boldly scrolled legs with escargot feet complete the architecture, while the richness and patina of the old-growth cherry wood with a nod to bookmatching apparent on the side panels and the weathered, aged look that is so incredibly captivating.
