18th Century French Oak Buffet with Center Drawers from Lorraine

$5,600

About

Hand-carved in France during the 1700’s, this amazing oak buffet has two doors on iron hinges that are separated by three vertically stacked drawers. This orientation is often found in buffets produced in the Lorraine region, which borders Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg. Another characteristic of a Lorraine buffet is the shaped and recessed door panels with deep molding that has pointed angles. Open scroll keyplates are affixed to each lockable door, that opens to reveal two 28-inch-wide shelves. The center drawers were constructed with dovetail joinery and iron pulls, but only the top two lock (one key operates both locks). Pierced escutcheons consisting of geometric shapes surround the middle of all three drawers. The keyplate and pulls are surrounded by volute scrolls with deep bends in the middle. The highly sinuous apron has a C-scroll center bordered by an S-scroll on each side. The head of each S-scroll abuts into the head of a longer, more folded scroll. A carved flower rests on the tail of the lengthier scroll. The stem of the flower flows elegantly into the two front scrolled feet on the end of small yet stout cabriole legs. The back feet are blocked. The quarter round molding of the top hangs over the body of the buffet. Angled pilasters with elongated, recessed ovals separate the sides from the front. The sides are comprised of recessed rectangular panels above sinuous aprons. A buffet’s original function was to store linens and serving pieces in a dining room. At over six feet long, our 18th century French oak buffet with center drawers would make a grand statement in either of those rooms. This piece has been cleaned and waxed, and is in its original, beautiful condition.
