About the Item

Italian cabinet on table. Walnut and rosewood, hawksbill, bronze in color and gilded, 17th century. Sample desktop pool located on ball and claw with handles on the sides. The front features the advanced central chapel; and four drawers each side; Tops work an ornate corridor with plant elements made of bronze. The buffet or table that holds barguen~era is turned legs insured by lower chambrana (also machined with a given center) together and to the cover by curved metal fasteners capped scroll. Barguen~o paws have claw-shaped carved synthesized bird on ball, something very typical of the seventeenth century. The cover has this elegant geometric decoration, and so do the five drawers discover: the decoration of the side to diamonds made in marquetry by dark wood inlaid fillets of light, an element that is repeated in the interior of the chapel is reduced. As usual in the baroque barguen~o, the center of the sample is where the decoration is conducted, in general, based on areas tortoiseshell framed or highlighted with dark wood moldings and surrounded by sinuous curved lines made in marquetry, always maintaining symmetry. The chapel remains an architectural composition: Lower basement, facade four columns with pronounced rapture and a niche in the center with the figure of (Hercules or Heracles) fighting Caco, the giant who terrorized the Palatine Hill before the founding of Rome. The drawers of lateral shields stand by locks, made of gilded bronze. The general outline of the furniture is very common in all the European Baroque and the compositional clarity not break until the arrival of the Rococo. All decorative elements, based on the classical tradition, are characteristic of this type of furniture: desks with outdoor displays of this scheme are known and performed throughout Europe, with a Flemish influence in its creation, the Italians being the most valued for their decoration. The practice of employing tortoiseshell plates furnishings revived in Europe in the seventeenth century, reaching this reddish material on gold funds and applying usually under very often. The high price and high demand for furniture with sea turtle shell are explained by the shortage of material, it was necessary to import (usually Central) and, for their work, a highly skilled labor was required.

Italian style "bargueño". Tortoiseshell, wood, bronze. 18th century.
Located in Madrid, ES
Uncovered sample desk made of wood, with the central part advanced and highlighted with a double chapel of architectural composition. Each of the sides has five drawers with the front decorated with tortoiseshell and an elaborate golden bronze lock shield (two rampant lions faced, located on a garland and with a shield crowned between them, in which the hollow of the key). The center of the front has two levels: the lower one has four columns with éntasis, two on each side and joined by an entablature and a top finish in dark wood, and a series of gold metal elements in the center between which it stands out, sheltered under a semicircular arch, the figure of Hercules fighting against Caco; the upper one has some moldings forming some recesses, with an important heraldic shield in the center, all enhanced with volutes towards the sides, and different elements in gilded metal, of classicist inspiration. The general scheme of the furniture responds to a very widespread and valued model in 17th century Europe, of which the best examples have been, as a rule, those of Italian manufacture, and which is continued in the eighteenth century without breaking the compositional clarity of the one that shows in this frontal but yes changing slight decorative details and elements in the area of the central chapel, above all. The practice of using tortoiseshell plates...
