19th Century Italian Pine Madia / Buffet

About the Item

Buffet, or madia, hand-made in Italy in the early 1800s using pine. The wood has been stained a walnut color, which gives this buffet a very warm and elegant look. In fact, this is a piece that although was originally made for a country home, it would look awesome also in a less rustic setting. We found this piece during one of our many trip around the Lazio countryside and just fell in love with it. As typical with madia, the top opens and provides a storage space. Below we can find two drawers on top of a two-door cabinet. The buffet is very simple in lines, nevertheless it is decorated with geometrical molding on the flat surfaces, both the drawers and doors are framed by molding and faux drawer fronts are created by molding. This is a piece that once upon a time was a must be in an italian country house and will now add a touch of warmth and rustic elegance to any modern home.

18th Century Bleached Walnut Italian Credenza, Buffet, Sideboard
Located in Carmine, TX
Walnut credenza handcrafted in Italy in the mid 1700s and bleached recently. Don't let its delicate overall appearance fool you because, as my lower back can attest, this baby is heavy. This is a beautiful credenza that follow the typical italian style with slanted sides, which create small triangular storage spaces on either sides of the two main front doors and drawer. Overall the credenza is very straight in lines. The drawers have flat overlay fronts, and the doors show chamfered panels with a raised carving and are framed by flat molding. The carving and molding help giving the piece some depth and decoration. The bleaching process also provided the credenza with additional warmth, depth and decoration, by bringing out the beautiful grain and underlying colors of the wood. The top of the credenza is composed of boards with ogee edge nailed to the main case. On the inside the credenza is very spacious, providing plenty of storage space. Overall this is a beautiful piece that has lived a long life, and has received some help in "hanging in there" over the years. This is a piece that will fit well with both modern and...

The buffet features 3 drawers over three doors, all decorated with beautiful carving and raised panels throughout. The drawers show beautiful hand-made dovetailed joints and the back itself is a work of art. The buffet is still sitting on its original carved feet and shows a scalloped and carved apron, and is finished with simple, original hardware. This piece was hand-selected because of its beautiful proportions, carvings and overall color. The bleaching process shows much of the natural grain of the wood but it also highlights the human-made carvings, creating a beautiful combination of natural and human designs...
