About the Item
Antique French Louis XV step-front marble top serpentine buffet is an exceedingly elegant expression of the style, with motifs carried over from the prior Louis XIV style expressed in more delicate realizations. The subtle scroll of the serpentine sides meets at the rounded cornerpost, which is stepped back from the center section, defined by another brace of rounded cornerposts, with all four carved at the top with floral sprays and at the bottom with an acanthus leaf on the shoulders of the scrolled legs in a corbel form, terminating in escargot feet. The legs also embrace the undulating scrollwork of the 5 apron sections, the centermost of which is lavished with an exquisite scallop shell flanked by foliate sprays in bold relief. Above we see the three cabinet doors, each hung with full length barrel hinges and fitted with cast brass key guards, then adorned with foliate and stylized shell motifs across the tops of the elegantly contoured frameworks around the raised panels. The drawers above are more restrained, with a pair of recessed molded panels flanking the exquisitely cast brass pulls. The top is of a richly veined marble with rouge accents that has been painstakingly contoured and hand-beveled to follow the complex form of the casework below for a beautiful yet carefree finishing touch!
