About the Item

Hand-carved circa 1780, this walnut buffet deux corps has motifs associated with both the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods, making it a beautiful transitional case piece. The warm brown patina accentuates the shapely carvings, most noticeably the en chapeau crown with beaded molding above a deep cavetto undercut. Beneath the high-arching top is a foliate and floral monogram of either “LM” or “ML”, indicating that the two-body cabinet was probably commissioned by a wealthy individual. The two doors of the upper body mirror the form of the crown and are adorned with slender volute moldings that frame the chandelle pilaster mullion. Repeating husks embellish the edges, running parallel to the long, iron hinges that allow the doors to open and reveal the upholstered interior with three shelves (the red and white upholstery features pastoral imagery and pink gimp). The lower body, which is not upholstered, has a single shelf fronted by two doors carved in the same manner as the upper body doors. A pair of compact cabriole front legs (there are two modified blocks in the back) blend seamlessly with the graceful, low-plunging front apron with a foliate cartouche. Our French transitional buffet deux corps would make an impressive addition to any dining area, kitchen, or living room.
