About the Item

Austere yet richly tactile, this sideboard by Olavi Hänninen commands with its elemental massing and raw sculptural presence. Hewn from deeply grained elm, the façade is animated by vertical fluting—each groove irregular, hand-chiseled, and charged with an almost primeval rhythm. The wood’s warm, resinous sheen amplifies its depth, casting shadows that shift with the light. Designed by Olavi Hänninen, a seminal figure in 20th-century Finnish design, the piece reflects the aesthetic of ascetic monumentality for which he is known. Hänninen’s work is defined by an embrace of material honesty and a rejection of decorative flourish. This sideboard exemplifies his modernist ethos, rooted in Finland’s craft traditions and suffused with quiet intensity. Emerging in the 1950s, the sideboard reflects the Nordic brutalist movement’s tactile and architectural sensibilities—distinct from its French and Italian counterparts in its embrace of rusticity over gloss. The asymmetry in the carving and the slightly irregular shaping of the vertical supports speak to a deliberate departure from industrial precision, favoring a human, nearly ecclesiastical solemnity. Executed in solid elm, the piece features hand-wrought iron hardware—drawn handles and escutcheons with visible forge marks that complement the natural undulation of the wood. The base, composed of thick posts joined by a shaped stretcher, reinforces the work’s architectural grounding. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. Its presence is both rustic and reverent—more altar than cabinet—exuding a timeless gravity that transcends functional typology. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.

Brutalist Sideboard Oak, France, 1950s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Kaštel Sućurac, Splitsko-dalmatinska županija
This sculptural sideboard holds a quiet monumentality—its façade a study in balance, depth, and geometric relief. Two symmetrical doors are adorned with deeply carved concentric medallions, each centered within a bevel-edged square that projects from the surface like a wooden echo. Between them, five central drawers offer rhythmic contrast with their horizontal fluting, lending a linear tension to the rounded volumes flanking them. In the style of Charles Dudouyt, this piece reflects the postwar fascination with medieval forms reinterpreted through modernist clarity. The carved motif—a recessed bull’s-eye framed in architectural moldings—recalls the rustic abstraction seen in French design of the 1940s and ’50s, where massing, form, and shadow did the work of ornament. Carved from solid oak, the cabinet is grounded by splayed bracket legs that introduce a subtle kinetic lift. Their flared stance balances the robust body above, suggesting movement held in suspension. The drawer pulls are brass discs, minimal in gesture yet warm in tone, allowing the sculptural surfaces to speak. Inside, the cabinet offers generous storage behind paneled doors, while the drawers glide with dovetail construction and timeworn ease. A visible fissure on one of the door medallions...
