About the Item

In 17th and 18th century France, a specialized buffet with a marble top, known as a buffet de chasse, became popular. These buffets were often found in hunting lodges and large chateaus throughout the country. The marble top would be used to display freshly killed game in a dining room or kitchen before a feast. Our Louis XIV buffet de chasse is topped by a 1 ¾” thick rouge de Languedoc marble. The red marble with cream and brown veining and gray inclusions has a luxurious and deep quarter round molding. Beneath the marble is a two-door oak cabinet that was assembled using dowel construction. Although there are no decorative carvings to the piece, the heavy moldings have inherent beauty. Both sides feature a rectangular panel with a recessed border surrounded by several layers of molding. There is a subtle curve adorned with an elongated rectangular panel and thin molding where the sides and the front meet. A pair of asymmetrical doors with thick moldings open on iron hinges to reveal a full-length shelf. Both doors have a recessed geometric panel with canted upper corners that are filled with small wedge-shaped carvings. A robust socle with four layers of molding wraps around three sides of the buffet, providing a solid base. The buffet was recently stripped, allowing the oak grain to gain prominence, which enhanced the appeal of the early 18th century oak buffet de chasse. This buffet can be used in a kitchen, dining room or anywhere that requires a strong and attractive storage piece.
