French Charles Dudouyt Art Deco Enfilade Sideboard wood mirror bronze

About the Item

One of a kind and Exquisite Art Deco piece of furniture attributed to Charles Dudouyt (1885-1947), one of the best French furniture makers of the first half of the 20th century. Simple structure, it is configured with two large doors on the sides, separated in the middle area by four registers with a mixtilinear front. The design is completed with a mirror with rounded corners. This piece of furniture is presented with doors worked with an extraordinary design reminiscent of brutalism. Each one is configured through a kind of double molding, with a carved border in four corridors in the central part. In this area, the original gilded bronze handles appear. They are a real eye-catcher thanks to their circular shape. Inside there are two shelves, providing a large storage capacity. The four drawers in the central area also have a very original design, with impressive curves in their mixed-linear profile. The use of oak wood is a great success, which has been given a little varnish so that the beautiful grain can be appreciated. This is exemplified very well in the top, arranged as a checkerboard, which has been carried out thanks to the combination of the direction of the grain. The entire piece of furniture is raised on richly carved wooden legs, also with a brutalist appearance. The piece exudes quality in all aspects of its conception and construction. It has characteristics typical of brutalist furniture such as its sober silhouette and pronounced geometric shapes. About the author A major figure in early 20th-century design, Charles Dudouyt (1885-1947) moved the aesthetics of French design from an elaborate classicism to a more modernist sensibility. Born in 1885, Charles Dudouyt began his artistic career after studying at the Germain Pilon school. He painted, drew and made a living illustrating publications, notably for Calmann-Levy and the Assiette au Beurre. In 1918, upon his return from the war, he designed and commissioned street lamps, lampshades and various decorative objects with his wife. This led him to create a rustic-style furniture factory in Pontoise in 1920: L’Abeillée Author: Attributed to Charles Dudouyt Style: Art Deco Materials: Oak wood Period: 1940s Country of origin: France Provenance: French private collection Good condition considering its age and use Overall dimensions: 154 x 173 x 49 cm.
