About the Item

Credenza in Carved Oak with Marble Top, France, 1940s A sculptural monolith in sun-bleached oak, this credenza evokes the quiet grandeur of pastoral life, its façade animated by a deeply carved bucolic scene—a cottage, trees in leaf, a solitary figure mid-walk—etched with reverence into the very grain. The silhouette is solemn yet generous, framed by beveled moldings and resting on curled feet, each adorned with stylized foliage. A slab of black marble crowns the piece with gravitas. In the spirit of Dominique, Exposition Coloniale Internationale, Paris, 1931 This work draws direct inspiration from the landmark credenza by André Domin and Marcel Genevrière—collectively known as Dominique—exhibited at the Exposition Coloniale in Paris, 1931. While that celebrated piece was more geometric and imperial in its material language, this cabinet reimagines their Art Deco idiom through the lens of French rural romanticism. Its whimsical figuration and carved storytelling depart from Dominique’s typical restraint, offering instead a folkloric warmth filtered through Deco structure. Art Deco Meets Art Populaire Produced in the 1940s, the piece bridges haute déco with vernacular charm. The narrative relief—at once naïve and lyrical—places it within the tradition of Art Populaire, yet the bold symmetry and refined craftsmanship assert its place in the Art Deco canon. It is a rare synthesis of formal rigor and pastoral intimacy. Crafted in solid oak, the credenza displays a dry, tactile finish that speaks to its age and integrity. The carved doors are executed with a subtle sculptural depth, their scalloped outlines echoing early modernist experiments with form. The black marble top introduces a cool mineral contrast, grounding the ensemble in both luxury and permanence. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. Compact in scale but commanding in voice, the credenza acts as both visual anchor and narrative tableau. In a modern interior, it reads as an objet d’art—something between architecture and allegory, inviting the eye to pause and the imagination to wander. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
