About the Item

The elegant balance of the decorative details on this 18th century French buffet or credenza showcases the superb skill of cabinet making in France. Please note the symmetry of the moulding on each of the four cabinet doors with each upper section highlighted with a "coquille" (shell) motif. The undulating apron set between the front legs also demonstrates symmetry as it is centred upon a circular floral medallion. Interestingly there are three drawers set above the four cabinet doors with the centre drawer flanked by moulding that repeats the same pattern as that seen on the drawer fronts. This antique French walnut credenza or buffet was always meant for the storage of valuable objects as indicated by the substantial original hardware of the hinges and the escutcheons (decorative metal plates covering the keyholes to protect the timber when an iron key was inserted). Access to the interior was controlled by who possessed the keys (yes, the keys remain with the piece) as there are no knobs or pulls. Another detail of note are the front corners which are set at an angle of 45 degrees and defined by fluted carving at the top above a moulded enclosure chosen to simulate a pilaster. The sides of the antique buffet/credenza feature a large recessed panel as well as a continuation of the bold curve of the apron between the front and rear legs. The top is made of oak chosen for its durability and strength as is typical of antique 18th century cabinets. The edge of the top has a moulded edge and follows the same profile as the front and sides of the buffet credenza to complete its overall impression of elegance and beauty.
