This antique English mahogany sideboard or serving table circa 1865 possesses an exceptionally elegant profile because of its beautifully shallow depth and slender legs that frame the superb carved decoration. Please enlarge the photographs to see the subtle details that are combined to create this exceptional table. The entire apron that contains the five drawers follows the shaped profile of the top and this repetition of the construction indicates the level of quality possessed by this sideboard. The apron is centred upon a finely detailed urn flanked with floral swags and this motif is one of the designs made famous by Robert Adam. The apron has a continuous pattern of fluting that stretches across the front and along both sides and this deep and dramatic carving serves to capture and reflect light in an attractive manner. Above each of the four legs on the front is a tall lidded urn placed within the apron and another two urns on each side. It is important to remember that in the eighteenth century when this design appeared there were only natural sources of light (candles and firelight) available so timber, colour and carving were all combined in a way to take advantage of the way light filled an interior. The table stands upon six square tapered legs that end in a square foot with each leg distinguished by a circular rosette and vertical fluting that accentuates the length of the legs. This use of motifs originating in ancient Greece and Rome is a particular hallmark of Robert Adam, the Scottish architect and designer. Being able to to be seen with equal impact from all directions is a particular element of Adam designs that remains as potent and desirable today as when first seen in the seventeen hundreds.
