About the Item

A façade of rhythmic geometry and tactile relief, this French sideboard from the 1960s asserts itself as both furniture and sculpture. Its carved ornamentation—hypnotic bullseye medallions and stepped pyramidal motifs—emerges from the solid oak like architectural bas-relief, catching shadow and light with sculptural intent. Each door panel is adorned with concentric circular carvings, their radial symmetry disrupted only by three short chiseled flanks—gestural marks that evoke a kind of primitive code. At the center, a vertical cabinet door is flanked by two drawers, framed in stepped chamfers that lend a Brutalist sense of massing. In the style of Charles Dudouyt, whose postwar oeuvre married regional oakcraft with a modernist sensibility, this piece stands firmly within the lineage of French Decorative Brutalism. Its visual vocabulary—repetitive carvings, rich grain, and monolithic proportions—echoes the artisanal rigor of midcentury ateliers who resisted the rise of industrial uniformity. Crafted entirely from solid oak, the sideboard displays rich medullary rays and warm tonal variation. The carving, likely hand-executed, retains subtle tool marks that testify to its making. Its feet, slightly splayed at the base, anchor the piece with architectural gravitas. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. A commanding yet poetic presence, this sideboard is as much a sculptural artifact as a functional object—resonating with the quiet strength of material and form. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.

Brutalist Sideboard Oak, France, 1950s
By Charles Dudouyt
Located in Kaštel Sućurac, Splitsko-dalmatinska županija
This sculptural sideboard holds a quiet monumentality—its façade a study in balance, depth, and geometric relief. Two symmetrical doors are adorned with deeply carved concentric medallions, each centered within a bevel-edged square that projects from the surface like a wooden echo. Between them, five central drawers offer rhythmic contrast with their horizontal fluting, lending a linear tension to the rounded volumes flanking them. In the style of Charles Dudouyt, this piece reflects the postwar fascination with medieval forms reinterpreted through modernist clarity. The carved motif—a recessed bull’s-eye framed in architectural moldings—recalls the rustic abstraction seen in French design of the 1940s and ’50s, where massing, form, and shadow did the work of ornament. Carved from solid oak, the cabinet is grounded by splayed bracket legs that introduce a subtle kinetic lift. Their flared stance balances the robust body above, suggesting movement held in suspension. The drawer pulls are brass discs, minimal in gesture yet warm in tone, allowing the sculptural surfaces to speak. Inside, the cabinet offers generous storage behind paneled doors, while the drawers glide with dovetail construction and timeworn ease. A visible fissure on one of the door medallions...
