An unusually shallow Louis Philippe style painted enfilade from France c. 1870. Please take a moment and enlarge the additional photographs provided and zoom on the details that make this a handsome piece of furniture. By the middle of the nineteenth century King Louis Philippe of France had ensured that the industrial revolution with its invention of new machinery to manufacture goods was active in France. A desire for simplicity became apparent aided by the new ability to take raw materials and quickly turn them into consumer goods. This cabinet is an excellent example of this new capacity as all the lines on this piece are either vertical or horizontal with no excessive carved decoration or detail. The top extends slightly beyond both the front and sides and the durability of the oak timber used exclusively in this cabinet remains apparent. The front of the cabinet features a symmetrical arrangement of three rectangular doors situated within an outer frame. Each door is set within the frame using recessed pin hinges so the doors open to a ninety degree angle revealing an interior storage space bisected with a shelf to increase the available capacity. The front of each of the cabinet doors has the same appearance with an inset panel bordered with a band of moulding to create a sense of movement when light sweeps across the facade. There is a unique aspect to the panels here as each of them feature a hand finished effect resembling the curve of a cushion as the panel moves away from the moulding. This slight change in the surface serves to also capture light in a mesmerizing yet subtle manner and demonstrates the skill of the cabinet maker. As this piece was always designed to be used as a storage cabinet the interior was left unfinished as seen here. Initially the doors were fitted only with locks to ensure the security of the contents with the brass knobs added later to give more ease of use. The doors do have working locks to be used if desired. Today this cabinet will meld seamlessly with any interior.
