17th Century Italian Renaissance Walnut Tuscan Scrittoio Writing Desk

About the Item

An extremely rare form of Renaissance furniture, this writing desk is likely from Florence and would have originated from the palazzo study room of a noble family. The study rooms, also called "scrittoio" or "studiolo," were reserved for receiving only select visitors and contained important family papers and collections of scientific instruments, rare books, art and obscure flora and fauna. These rooms and the objects contained within them were statements of the owner's worldliness and cultural prowess. This handsome piece of furniture features a reserved, architectural design. A simple cornice is supported by stop-fluted Composite order columns with a bold plinth. The upper case reveals a series of prospect drawers and a small arcade with a phoenix design, possibly associated with the patron's family crest. The bottom case with carved rosette decorated doors and bronze knobs opens to two shelves of storage space. A similar example of scrittoio is preserved in the Palazzo Vecchio and bears the death mask of Dante Alighieri. Italy, c. 1600
