About the Item

New finds from Tohoku area, Japan. This single tier Mizuya tansu is made from premium quality, reddish Sugi Cedar. The product of circa 1870s to 1900s (Meiji to early Taisho period). Finished with traditional Urushi lacquer, which color is deepened by age and remains in nice wabi sabi touch. Fully stained to the inside with Urushi lacquer, burnt pine ink, and persimmon tannin (kakishibu). In many cases, the inside of the Mizuya left unstained or just partly stained, this become more significant when close to the modern age. That means, this Mizuya is relatively older, or, made as a high-quality product. The structural parts are made of the thick lumbers, it's still tough enough for actual use. Originally made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener. The lumbers from Tohoku area are generally Superb quality, since the trees are growing slowly & aging in the cold weather. Growing slowly means tightly packed, also the cold weather prevents the lumbers from damages. It brings durability, heaviness, and beautiful, densed grains to the lumbers. Tohoku's simple but bold style with sort of warmness glowing through and getting stronger when it comes to the antiques.
