19th Century Chinese Black Lacquered Cabinet

About the Item

A rare Ming design, lacquered Elm cabinet dating back to the early 19th century is offered for sale. This exquisite cabinet boasts a beautiful minimalist design that will suit both modern and more traditional interiors. It features a wonderful original age-related patina that would be near impossible to replicate. The construction of this cabinet relied on intricate and complicated joinery techniques, without the use of nails, showcasing the skill of the craftsmen. Remarkably, it remains structurally sound even after 200 years. The lacquer used in its creation is derived from the resin of the Rhus verniciflua tree, a material that has been utilised in Chinese furniture for over two millennia. This particular style of lacquer cabinet originates from the Shanxi Province of China. Lacquer cabinets, like this one, were traditionally given as wedding gifts, symbolising the auspicious start of a new life together. The cabinet beautifully showcases the elegance and simplicity of Ming design. It stands as a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic flair exhibited in Chinese furniture, and it is still as usable now as it was the day it was first made. 177cm H x 134.5cm W x 73.5cm D
