About the Item

19th century French carved cabinet bookcase Breton Brittany Wine Bar Gothic. Direct from Saint-Mathieu in southern France, a highly carved “Brittany” cabinet, in a one-piece, slender size, versatile for placement throughout the home. The style and design are true to the Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France, which was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime, so the hand carvings are noted for spindled ship’s wheels and symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent their strong work ethic, yet also their enjoyment of life. All these Breton carved features are present in this cabinet! Fancy upper crown spindle railing on all sides with large finials to the corners. Spindle trim continues across the cabinet apron on all 3 sides, as well as spindle bands across 3 sides of the lower shelf. This elaborate spindling provides a very elegant silhouette, and sets this cabinet apart from others! Carved banding frames the entire cabinet, as well as the door panel, which features a beautiful carved Brittany scene with gentleman in full period clothing, from hat to shoes! Turned posts support the upper cabinet and frame the lower, open display area. Note also carved back panel and carved side panels. Traditionally antique furniture from this region had a very dark finish and was frequently carved from oak or chestnut wood. Solid, heavy and strong, well built by craftsmen of the period, c1890. Also of note, the original paper tag on the cabinet back, providing provenance as to it’s origin in Saint-Mathieu, France. Measurements: 58.5” ht. x 26” x 17.5”.
