About the Item

A superb 19th century French safe, with a secret combination, was manufactured of iron, steel, and wood in Paris by Ancienne Maison Vallet for A. Dutrou suc de Frété & Cie, circa 1870s. Fully functional, its very clever locking mechanism opens with three keys and a four letters' combination. It features two doors, one on the top with another below in the base. The top door opens to reveal two steel shelves and an interior lock box, while the bottom door opens to reveal two steel shelves. It retains its maker's bronze medallion which reads, "Ancienne Maison Vallet A. Dutrou suc de Frété & Cie, A. Dutrou suc de Frété & Cie, Bvard Bonne Nouvelle, 7 Paris. Very nice patina. Secure safe in great working condition with a beautiful finish throughout. Three working keys (one for the main safe, a second for the inner lock box, and a third for the lower safe) and combination included. Until the 19th century, iron safes were essential for storing valuable items, and every single company in France used to have a safe to protect their money and documents. Today, antique French safes are very popular and are sought after for both their practicality and decorative appeal. Exceptional examples of the locksmith's craft of the time, their complicated mechanisms are a testament to the locksmith's expertise and skill . Keep your valuables and documents in this important antique hobnail safe. Manufactured by Magaud de Charf in Clermont, France, the monumental wrought iron safe is decorated with nail head motifs on all four sides and has an all-original, working mechanism. The front door is further decorated with two large hinges on the sides, and further embellished with a bronze plaque on the top which reads: "Doumaux Jeune a Clermont 1838". The inside opens to reveal an amazing lock mechanism and a large storage compartment. To open the safe, you first need to find and locate the nail which will activate and open the key latch on the right. Next, place the two large keys in each key hole one at a time and turn them in a certain order to open the safe; when opened, the inside reveals three wooden drawers over a bottom shelf which lifts up for underneath storage.
