About the Item

"Round Surfaced Cabinet Moss" by REM Atelier Dimensions: H 70 x W 192 x D 42 cm Material: Oak wood, glazed ceramic tiles Type: limited edition 1/20 Year: 2024 The clad cabinet combines different material characteristics into a functional sculpture. Thirty enamelled ceramic tiles shape the front surface of the cabinet, fusing into an organic relief that looks like a living structure embedded. Each tile has its own unique imprint and comes out of a different mold, creating a variety in shape and depth like a rhythm of fossils. The walnut foot is constructed from small vertical lines that follow the natural lines of the wood. The lines of the wood and the curves of the ceramic provide a graphic sense to the piece. Inspired by shapes that can be found in nature when different materials surprisingly grow together and take shape as a sculpture itself. Rem Atelier is a collaborative art and design project that started in 2015 in Rotterdam. The objects and installations created by artist Remty Elenga and designer Remco van Halderen are oftentimes an investigation into functionality and decor. The name REM represents the first shared letters of their names and, more symbolically, the melting together of their practice. Investigation into everyday objects, playfulness and spatial awareness characterize the work of REM Atelier. The works never merely serve to decorate a space. Rather they create an alternate space, subjecting the surroundings to the artwork.
