Antique 17th Century Dutch Renaissance Oak 4 Door Cabinet with Ebony Inlay

About the Item

This extraordinary and friendly sized cupboard is made of the finest watered oak in the tradition of the Dutch Renaissance during the “Dutch golden age” It is a two-story four-door cabinet with one drawer over large ebonized bun feet. This cabinet is made in the Provence of “Gelre” circa 1650. The raised paneled doors are typical for this province and this type of cabinet is also known as “Gelderse kussenkast”. It also features many inlaid black ebony panels. When this cabinet was made, ebony was more expensive than gold. A piece like this was commissioned by the owner to display their gained wealth. The cabinet has the original forged hinges and lock. The wood finish has a warm brown finish with deep gloss and a rich patina built up over the many years. Overall this piece of furniture is in very good antique and authentic condition. It has undergone minor repairs to its feet and the back cladding in our workshop. Also, the wax coat was freshened up to restore its original luster. The Dutch golden age The 17th century was an important century for the Netherlands. The region separated from the Spanish Empire and formed its republic. Dutch merchants established their first colonies in the Americas and opened up trade networks around the world. The Dutch economy flourished as much of Europe's trade began passing through Amsterdam. This money helped foster the arts, leading to the rise of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rubens. This was the Dutch Golden Age. The strong Dutch economy and celebration of the arts provided the financial and cultural security to inspire middle and upper-class citizens to buy lots of furniture. This was a big change from sparsely furnished homes of medieval times. Dutch patrons demanded high-quality, comfortable, and stylish products, and furniture makers obliged. Dutch furniture of the 17th century was lighter, more comfortable, and more versatile than in many other parts of the world. A key form of Dutch furniture in the 17th century was the cabinet, a taller furniture item that had replaced ground-level medieval chests. Cabinets were essential furniture items in most Dutch homes, as well as in the Dutch colonies. Since cabinets were generally used to hold valuable items like linens or silverware, they were works of art themselves, and we see some of the most important styles of Dutch furniture applied here. Condition details: This cabinet has been repaired in our workshop. The back and top cladding had gaps between the boards. They were closed by gluing strips of cotton over the gaps. The wax layer has been freshened up and a fresh wax coat was applied. Dimensions: 183 cm high, 52 cm deep (body), 67 cm deep (top corniche), 154 wide (top corniche) 126 cm wide (body).

Repaired: The gaps between the cladding were closed. This allows dust not to enter the cabinet. Wear consistent with age and use. The cabinet is in great condition. This type o furniture was first and formost a showpiece of understated elegance. It was always treated with care and that shows even until today.

Former collection Altounian At the beginning of the reign of Henri II (1547-1559) the furniture’s ornamentation evolves. The few medieval motifs that were still used are eventually relinquished. Furniture becomes more sober showcasing moulded panels and perfect architecture. Cabinet-makers use ornaments such as curved fluted or plain columns, feather quills, roses or winged putti heads. High-relief carving becomes more scarce and compositions lighter. To that end cabinet-makers draw inspiration from Fontainebleau motifs filtering them and adapting them to French taste. During this period cabinet-makers turn into a kind of architects. Indeed the architectural balance of furniture is the centre of their concerns. The study of Antic formulas is then a necessity. From this care given to proportions appear refined cabinets with pure lines.
