Unique Antique 19th Century Spanish Renaissance Bargueño in Solid Chestnut Wood
About the Item
On offer here is an exceptional Spanish Renaissance bargueño, crafted in the mid 19th century, from solid chestnut wood. This masterpiece, with its warm brown color, exudes timeless elegance that fits perfectly into any interior.
The bargueño is richly adorned with openwork brass fittings, behind which luxurious red velvet shines. The lock, also made of brass, features the iconic two columns of Hercules, symbolizing strength and durability. The lion mascarons add a touch of majesty to this already impressive piece. It stands on a base of the type called “foot bridge” (“de pie de puente”) by the shape and decoration of the central ‘”chambrana” with arches and elements in relief.
The interior of this bargueño is a true work of art, with beautifully carved details and numerous drawers that are both functional and decorative. When the flap is open, the surface height is 29.92 inches, ideal for sitting and working. The amphora handles add an extra touch of refinement to this historical piece of furniture.
Originally designed as a portable writing desk, the bargueño was a symbol of status and wealth in the Spanish Renaissance. This particular example combines practical usability with unparalleled aesthetics, making it a valuable addition for any collector or antique enthusiast.
Over the years, the bargueño has been extensively used, which has left it with a variety of small marks and a beautifully developed patina. In our workshop, the piece was gently cleaned and given a protective layer of wax. This very special bargueño is now clean, sturdy, and ready for use.
Historical Background: The bargueño, also known as vargueño, is one of the most distinctive pieces of Spanish furniture, originating in the late 16th century. These portable writing desks were highly prized in Spanish court culture, symbolizing status and wealth. They were designed to be easily transported, often featuring intricate metalwork and luxurious materials like velvet and brass. The characteristic decoration of the outer fall front with metal pierced mounts over red velvet, locks, and catches is a hallmark of the period.
