Chinese Lacquer, Carved and Gilt Cabinet Late Qing Dynasty
About the Item
Chinese lacquer, carved and gilt decorated cabinet. Gold gilt decorates the body of the dynamic red cabinet, deep relief carved panel insets and black lacquer central panels with finely drawn men in landscape settings. The top and sides decorated with incised birds and foliage. A very fine repeating detail covers the edges of the top, sides and base.
A tour de force of auspicious motifs and high style details throughout. Possibly the commission of a wealthy merchant in emulation of the imperial style. The late period produced many such works of decorative arts.

- Condition:Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Very original, unrestored. Complete with only a few losses. One door slightly warped held in by a spring latch. Shrinkage to the back panels, loose joins reinforced by metal angles. Once set in place and leveled the cabinet is firmly grounded.
