About the Item

This lacquered tall cabinet was crafted in the 19th century in Shanxi province, a region known for furniture designed after old customs, often decorated with intricate carvings and highly painted finishes. In fact, this example closely resembles ceramic cabinet models excavated from ancient tombs - a testament to its traditional style. Constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the large cabinet is faced with inset panels, each hand-painted atop black lacquer with gilt designs of landscapes, flowers, fruits and cranes - symbols of longevity. The cabinet opens by a set of folding doors that hinge open to an interior shelf, secured by a dagger-and-post lock and drop pulls in the shape of flower baskets. Three drawers sit at the top of the cabinet for off-season storage and the lower panels open to reveal a continuous lower compartment. The original lacquer finish has faded with time, now richly aged with a timeworn patina. Additional Dimensions: Door Opening: 40"W Drawers: 15"W x 17.5"D x 5.75"H
