circa 1874 Rotating Westphal Hardware Store Cabinet

About the Item

This immaculate hardware store cabinet by Henry Westphal rotates on its center from top to bottom. This version was patented in 1874. Each version of the Westphal cabinet was produced a little differently from the last. This cabinet has been incredibly well preserved, with special detail given to the top finial which is often completely shattered. The dimensions of this cabinet are 42"H x 21" in diameter. The cabinet is constructed entirely of cast iron with glass inserts on the face of each compartment. Each level spins independently on a center axis. In order to move this cabinet safely it is suggested that the finial be removed and then each subsequent layer be removed after that, leaving only the center axis and base. The cabinet can be reassembled afterward. This example of the Westphal cabinet is exceptionally well preserved and is a nearly-lost memento of the bygone era of industrial Americana. Rotating Piro Spice Cabinet for Kitchen Islands
By James Loewen
Located in Goshen, IN
Piro Spice is a sculptural object that doubles as a countertop spice cabinet.  The design, backed by a utility patent, allows the cook to access his or her spices easily, flipping open the cabinet and spinning, as needed.  The bulk of the material is a pre-finished high-grade Baltic birch multiply that is intended to withstand rough handling (although you can also be gentle with it!). Before you purchase, make sure you have counter space available for it with no cabinets above. A kitchen island or peninsula is probably the best location. Piro Spice will hold about 25 of your favorite spices.   15"W x 8"D x 25"H. 14-day full refund policy - buyer pays for return shipping. The story behind Piro: The original idea for Piro came from James' need to store, and make accessible, the CDs in his music collection - he already had solutions for the vinyl records and the cassette tapes.  After a great deal of tinkering, he came up with a solution, and patented it - see U.S. patent 7,789,473.  Alas, in the meanwhile Steve Jobs had come along and marketed the iPad, which put a massive dent in the CD storage...
