About the Item

The Shanty Cabinet is inspired by the patchwork of corrugated steel sheets which are used to construct many temporary or provisional homes, which exist in the whole world. Its beauty lies in imperfection. This spontaneous composition of superimposed surfaces in different colours is recreated with a wavy front. Its body has an assymetrical volume and each door opens differently. The buffet is manufactured from MDF fibreboard with a lacquered matte finish. The containers are joined together using a mechanical fixing system. Each door is made of MDF fibreboard with a mechanised waveform frontal and matte lacquered finish. 8mm painted glass top. Octagonal legs made of extruded anodised gold aluminium. Structure in tubular steel with welded strips to assemble legs. The sideboard includes folding doors + drawers. MATERIALS AND FINISHES Modules in MDF fibreboard with a lacquered matte finish, joined together using a mechanical fixing system. Doors in MDF fibreboard with a mechanised waveform frontal and matte lacquered finish. 8mm painted glass top. Octagonal legs made of extruded anodised gold aluminium. Nipa Doshi, born in Mumbai and raised in Delhi, recalls being shaped by an appreciation for modernist design ideals and the importance of craft, while Jonathan, trained in fine cabinetmaking and industrial design, was inspired by his family’s furniture factory in Scotland. Now based in London the design office was established in 2000. Their work celebrates the hybrid and explores the coming together of cultures, technology, storytelling, industrial design and fine craftsmanship. Working across diverse disciplines and industries, they operate according to their own rules motivated by extracting as much richness as possible out of ideas and concepts.
