Dominique, Two-door Parchment-clad Sideboard, France, 20th Century

About the Item

This parchment clad, black lacquered sideboard stands atop a broad base lined with nickel bronze, and possesses two doors operated by a central handle. It is representative of the duo's best, whose body of enduring designs are characterized by rectilinear lines punctuated by smooth curves, inspired by the human form. Dominique quickly rose to prominence via commissions for silver designer Jean Puiforcat and perfumer Houbigant. They had a strong showing at the 1925 Paris Exposition International des Art Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, and later at the 1931 Exposition Colonial and 1937 Salon des Artistes Decorateurs in Brussels. The pair enjoyed success throughout the 1930s, first at their storefront on Paris's avenue Kléber, and then with a series of lucrative private and government commissions. In 1933 Dominique began designing interiors of ocean liners, notably the Normandy for the Compagnie Generale Transatlantique. In addition, Mobilier National (the official purveyor of furniture for the French government) engaged the house to design the Landscape Exhibition at Elysée Palace.

Jean-Luc Le Mounier, Papillon, Black Wings, Two-Door Cabinet, France, 2021
By Jean-Luc Le Mounier
Located in New York, NY
By employing ever-more complex techniques, wedding rare species of wood and precious metals in novel arrangements, and endowing each piece with incredible components, Jean-Luc Le Mounier creates work, astonishing and seductive in equal measure, that pushes the frontier of his craft into the realm of art. This exciting exploration is perhaps best-evidenced by Papillon pieces, Le Mounier’s series of inimitable cabinets, all rendered by his expert hand, and featuring doors carved into the shape of a butterfly’s wings. This particular iteration features wings covered in black straw marquetry, a delicate inner gate wrought of antiqued bronze, and a sumptuous interior of lemon ceylon wood.
