Early 20th Century Stripped Oak Bookcase

About the Item

Large display cabinet or bookcase in the style of the Aachen-Liège Baroque. Early 20th century. Made of solid oak with fine carvings. Two-part oak corpus on pressed ball feet, coffered at the sides, with central risalit, rounded edges and fluted profiled cornice with segmental pediment burst by a central cartouche. A total of 10 doors of frame construction, 4 of them with wire mesh instead of wooden infill or glass. False glazing bars decorate the single glazing of the middle 3 doors of the top. Frieze-fluted jambs and archivolts frame the door, which is slightly recessed in a kind of niche, beneath the central cartouche carved in the shape of a rocaille with blossoms, which rises from the blasted segmental arch. The carving is typical for the Aachen/Liège region, floral and in particular dominated by the rocaille motif, as can be seen not only in the cartouche but also, among other things, in the 3 wooden door panels of the base cabinet. Inside fitted with shelves adjustable in height on toothed rails. Dimensions: 99 cm (base cabinet) or 265 cm (max. total) high / 38.97 inch (base cabinet) or 104.33 inch (max. total) high, 256 cm wide / 100.78 inch wide, 41 cm (display cabinet) or 55 cm (base cabinet) deep / 16.14 inch (display cabinet) or 21.65 inch (base cabinet) deep. Shelf depth of base cabinet: 2x 35 cm / 13.77 inch, 2x 40 cm / 15.74 inch, 1x 41 cm / 16.14 inch. Shelf depth of display cabinet: 2x 25 cm / 9.84 inch, 2x 30.5 cm / 12 inch, 1x 21 cm / 8.26 inch. Very good condition. The entire surface has been stripped of the old wax and completely sanded, revealing the beautiful matt texture of the raw oak wood. Small damage to the gouge at the bottom right of the top (see photos). The cabinet can be transported in 2 parts (top and base cabinet). In addition, the doors and the shelves can be removed.
