French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Mahogany, Ormolu and Leather Cartonnier
About the Item
A sensational and high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. mahogany, ormolu and leather cartonnier, signed "GROS PARIS". The cartonnier is raised by a fine base with a lovely arbalest shaped arch with pierced foliate ormolu mounts. At the center are six striking burgundy colored leather drawers with delicate and most elegant foliate gold tooled designs and fine ormolu pulls. Each drawer displays a letter from A to F and has a most unique flap down front and fold back top when opened for ease of access. The drawers can be locked by the ingenious top to bottom fold out side to the right which opens to reveal its original hardware. Above is the elegant curved top crown decorated with richly chased pierced foliate ormolu mounts and fine ormolu mottled fillets. The top crown houses a hidden compartment accessible by removing the top leather drawer. All original gilt throughout.
