It features an important ormolu keyhole and side handles with floral motifs of doves and rams, themes used in the symbolism of wedding gifts. Total dimensions: 105 cm high x 54 cm wide x 38 cm deep Chest dimensions: 50 cm x 54 cm x 38 cm The Regency in Paris (1715-1723) marked the return of the king and the return of political, economic, and cultural life to Paris. The government of the country during Louis XV's minority was led by Louis-Philippe of Orleans. The Regency style is considered a transition between Baroque and Rococo, preceding the Louis XV style. The aristocrats of the court sought greater refinement and intimacy, holding soirees in their salons shared with artists and poets, and romantic and gallant themes were a firm trend. From the Middle Ages until the early 20th century, it was social custom for the groom to present his future wife with a chest that served to store jewels, pearls, and valuables. When the bride received it and opened it, it became a moment that the engaged couple would remember throughout their lives. Marriage was a very important social and economic event. Family lines held a high value, and valuable and luxurious objects demonstrated social class and economic power. The exquisite workmanship of the chest, like the piece in question, made of a wood core and violet rosewood veneer, very difficult to make and enormously expensive, clearly demonstrates the high economic and social power of the families, possibly noble ones in the French court at the time. A highly refined piece, a gem in any setting or art collection. Very difficult to find on the international art and antiques market.
