Galuchat or Shagreen Covered Antique Japanese Tansu Cabinet by Alexander Lamont

About the Item

An early 20th century kiri (pawlonia) tansu with large indigo shagreen skin. Like the flooded paddy fields of Thailand that lie side-by-side, this piece reflects the light while also having a rich varied depth to the colour and texture created by beautifully applied, tonally varying shagreen. This tansu (cabinet) forms part of an on-going ‘conversation’ between the simple, traditional furniture of Japan and the special surfaces developed in the Alexander Lamont Workshops in Bangkok. Shagreen (raw stingray hides) has been exported from Thailand to Japan since the 1500’s (Ayuthaya period). In Japan they were used primarily for the decoration and protection of samurai swords and armour. The skins used on this tansu are very large and have been placed irregularly over the cabinet to create a dramatic visual and tactile surface. The large skins show more clearly the special surface of shagreen – beads of natural enamel that contrast with the deep indigo blue. Each skin is different and each skins absorbs the dye differently. This is a very powerful one-off example of the art of shagreen marquetry – covered on all upper sides.
