Geometric oak cabinet by Eyvind Beckman, Swedish Modern, 1940-50s

About the Item

Swedish modern cabinet designed by Eyvind Beckman. Produced in Sweden by his own company during the 1940-50s. Made from oak with inside of Mahogny. Striking geometric relief pattern on the doors. Nice brass hinges and key. Four drawers with green felt fabric on the inside. Very good vintage condition with few signs of age related wear and patina. In Sweden during the early 1930s, the functionalist movement sought to establish an optimal environment for contemporary individuals. Concurrently, through scholarly discussions, the crafts industry, and Swedish furniture manufacturing companies, a transformative evolution took place. This evolution materialized the principles outlined in the program declaration of the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, progressing beyond mere theory to become a reality for an expanding populace. By the early 1940s, Swedish homes and interiors underwent an adaptation to a more modern way of life and living. Termed Swedish Modern, it is often characterized as a somewhat gentler and perhaps more humanistic iteration of modernism. This distinction was notably showcased in exhibitions such as Paris 1937 and New York 1939. The focal point of this movement was the development of utilitarian items and artistic works for everyday use, marked by an innovative design ethos. In the 1940s, the production of luxury goods once again became a hotbed for groundbreaking ideas. The novel approach to creating inviting and comfortable interiors that emerged in Sweden during the late 1930s and 1940s has left an enduring imprint on the Scandinavian style of furnishing. Prominent figures associated with Swedish Modern include Bruno Mathsson, GA-Berg, Elias Svedberg, Carl-Axel Acking, Carl Malmsten, and notably, Josef Frank. In summary, Swedish Modernism is acknowledged for its softer and more pleasing manifestation of modern design principles.
