German Baroque Cabinet on Metal Stand

About the Item

Provincial baroque cabinet. Presumably South German, 17th century with later additions. Standing on a modern metal frame. Two-door dovetailed pinewood body with wide pilaster strips and moulded cornice. Surface stained and glazed black, as well as partially painted. Richly decorated front with gold-coloured accentuated flambeau decoration. The flame mouldings frame a total of 19 paintings in various geometric fields. On the pilaster strips and the cornice are small depictions of flowers and cartilage and auricles, as well as a putto in a central position at the top. Four larger naïve depictions in portrait format can be found in the offset framed fields on the doors. All 4 pictures show a lady dressed in a slightly frivolous manner, 3 times together with a putto, once with a gentleman. The metal frame was newly made to match the cabinet and forms a beautiful modern contrast to the original antique. At the same time, it emphasises the character of the piece of furniture, which is not only presented as a work of art in itself, but can also be seen as an image carrier for painting. Originally, the cabinet most likely rested on a base or plinth. The doors have bent slightly over the centuries, but the locking function with the original lock and key was restored in the course of the restoration. Inside, the cabinet has fixed shelves. Dimensions: 228 cm high / 89.76 inch high, 134 cm wide / 52.75 inch wide, 63.5 cm deep / 25 inch deep. Height of the metal frame: 70 cm / 27.55 inch. Authentic, ready-for-everyday-use restored condition with signs of age, use and visible traces of previous repairs and old woodworm (not active!). Among other things, the following restoration work has been done: Top re-glued, and re-fixed with an invisible new frame from the inside; bottom panel glued, some prongs re-made and re-fitted; doors re-adjusted and original fittings re-fixed; 1 metal pin added to fitting; 2 missing mouldings added; 2 scalloped mouldings or flame mouldings added by re-modelling; surface cleaned, some re-coloured black and sealed. We recommend fixing the cabinet to the wall for safety reasons. The furniture can be transported in 2 parts.

The buffet or table that holds barguen~era is carved legs insured by lower chambrana (also machined with a given center) together and to the cover by curved metal fasteners capped scroll. Barguen~o paws have claw-shaped carved synthesized bird on ball, something very typical of the seventeenth century. The cover has this elegant geometric decoration, and so do the five drawers discover: the decoration of the side to diamonds made in marquetry by dark wood inlaid fillets of light, an element that is repeated in the interior of the chapel is reduced. As usual in the baroque barguen~o, the center of the sample is where the decoration is conducted, in general, based on areas tortoiseshell framed or highlighted with dark wood moldings and surrounded by sinuous curved lines made in marquetry, always maintaining symmetry. T The general outline of the furniture is very common in all the European Baroque and the compositional clarity not break until the arrival of the Rococo. All decorative elements, based on the classical tradition, are characteristic of this type of furniture: desks with outdoor displays of this scheme are known and performed throughout Europe, with a Flemish influence in its creation, the Italians being the most valued for their decoration. The practice of employing tortoiseshell plates...
