About the Item

Magnificent and rare German cabinet from Augsburg, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. Crafted from light fruitwoods, this exceptional piece is richly decorated with fine marquetry covering the entire surface. The geometric patterns and architectural columns on the front are arranged to evoke an imaginative, almost futuristic cityscape—as it might have been envisioned in that period. Due to its imposing size, this cabinet was likely a prestigious custom commission, as most cabinets of the time were notably smaller. It retains its original iron fittings and rests on a turned-leg table base that mirrors the same marquetry pattern on its front, creating a cohesive and striking visual ensemble. The sides are adorned with gilded and chiselled bronze handles, adding a refined decorative touch. The piece remains in very good condition, with signs of age and use that enhance its authenticity while preserving its originality. Overall dimensions: 158 x 103 x 47 cm Cabinet only: 97 x 69 x 46 cm Origin: Augsburg, Germany Period: Circa 1600 Materials: Light fruitwoods, marquetry, bronze Condition: Very good, with original fittings and signs of age A highly decorative and museum-quality piece, rare on the market.
