About the Item

Old cabinet called "bargueño" from the end of the 17th century with an architectural structure with side drawers and the central part like a chapel finished in fronton. The front is decorated with various types of antique tortoise and decorated with gilded bronze with various renaissance forms. on the upper part we find 9 gilded eagles crowned with the symbol of royalty. On the door there is a painting representing the virgin mary with the child jesus painted in oil on table. Inside we also find 3 paintings that symbolize the expulsion of adam and eve to the world from the garden of paradise after having eaten the forbidden apple.. On the back part of the door there is a mirror that reflects the interior paintings. The sides are also decorated with tortoise and ebonized wood and bronze ornaments. The assembly makes this cabinet a very difficult piece to find due to its importance and rarity. The cabinet has been fully restored and is in very good condition. Measures: 195 x 158 x 40 cm. Its origin dates back to the 16th century. Very used piece of furniture, since the royal courts were nomadic and the desk solved many problems. The first influence comes from Italy. Beginning in the 16th century, Spanish desks abandoned the Renaissance figurative carving decoration and that of inlaid wood. There is a tendency towards a lack of ornamentation influenced by the architecture of El Escorial. The demand for this type of parts is increasing, to store documents, and simpler types are introduced. During the last quarter of the 16th century, there is a change of taste. Functionality is abandoned to highlight the purely decorative. Exotic materials such as ebony, ivory and tortoiseshell are used. One of the examples of ebony work was the studiolo of the Uffizzi Tribune in Florence. The taste for this type of desk was introduced to Spain by Felipe II.
