About the Item

An exceptional Berlin Art Deco style cabinet, circa 1925, veneered in flamed birch stained green and amber with horizontally veneered doors richly inlaid in maple. The marquetry features birds alongside geometric forms, combining a playful exoticism with formal clarity. The overall silhouette, refined and upright, gestures toward Swedish grace, yet its ornamentation and darker tonal palette suggest a Berlin-specific interpretation-one informed by the intellectual and artistic ferment of the Weimar Republic. The etched stylization of the tarsiers and the restrained, Etruscan-inspired forms place this cabinet within a broader European dialogue on tradition, fantasy, and modernity. Comparable in concept to the work of Swedish designers such as Carl Malmsten, yet grounded in the cosmopolitan eclecticism of Berlin, it can be attributed to Leon Nachtlicht, a designer known for his sophisticated furniture imbued with a quiet theatricality. Like others of its period, the cabinet likely served as a gentleman's dressing table in a private bedroom, though its understated scale and richly worked surfaces also lend it the aura of a bar cabinet. Its intimacy, both functional and aesthetic, is in keeping with the period's fascination with the exotic in domestic settings, as described by Arne Sildatke in Berlin Deko: "Whether applied in small-scale, private settings or in more grand, public situations, including cinemas and other entertainment venues, the depiction of the exotic was the subject of widely popular fascination. It was fueled by modern developments such as increasing tourism and faster transportation. Interest in the exotic comprises evolving concepts of cultural differences and a desire to affirm one’s own culture. The use of special imagery also reflects shared Western ideas about the world, which were part of a longer tradition dating back to the eighteenth century. When it came to private residences these fantastic exotic interiors took the form of luxurious architecture intended to evoke an exciting sense of the fashionable and the glamourous. The color schemes, furniture design, and material choices were steeped in the desire to create a synthesis of European traditions and the visual characteristics of more unfamiliar societies." This cabinet is a testament to a moment when luxury was being redefined - not by opulence alone, but by precision, imagination, and an evolving notion of the home as a stage for personal expression.
