About the Item

This is an old storage cabinet made in Japan. It was produced from the Taisho period to the early Showa period (1920s to 1940s). It is a piece that has both a long-established style and an aesthetic that is still relevant today. The main material used is Japanese cedar wood, which gives it a light and warm texture. Of particular note is the Ajiro sliding door on the front. Ajiro is a traditional Japanese technique of weaving thin wooden boards or bamboo diagonally, and has been used for ceilings and fixtures in the past. The delicate shading created by this Ajiro pattern gives the entire furniture an elegant look. The frame columns are made directly from logs, and the dynamic design that takes advantage of the natural shape of the logs is eye-catching. The beautiful fusion of straight and curved lines, artificial and natural, shows the overwhelming sense and free imagination of the craftsmen of the time. Furthermore, the front design is not perfectly symmetrical, but has a slight asymmetry. This suggests that it was used as a wall-mounted piece, which makes us imagine its use and placement in former life. It is a combination of practicality and artistry. The interior structure is also truly functional. Four of the five shelves are removable. The space on the left side can be used to store taller items. Daily necessities, utensils, books, and other items can be used in a variety of ways, depending on the user's imagination. The sliding door opens and closes surprisingly smoothly and has maintained a high degree of precision throughout the ages. The entire piece has been carefully cleaned and is ready for immediate use. This is a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture filled with the unique texture of old wood, traces of handcraftsmanship, and the spirit of “wabi-sabi,” which is uniquely Japanese.
